The words sheep, goat and lamb have been mentioned many times in the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. Gen 3:21 mentions that when Adam and Eve disobeyed the Lord and hid themselves, they covered them with fig leaves. BUT the Lord God made them garments of skins and clothed them. In the 4th Chapter we see that Abel brought the firstborn of the flock and their fat portions and the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering. In the 22nd Chapter when Abraham obeyed the Lord God to sacrifice his only son Isaac, the Lord provided with a ram to sacrifice in that place. In Leviticus we see a lamb was used when they celebrated the festival of the Passover. The Mosaic Law says that lambs and goats have to be sacrificed for the remission of sins. It was prophesied about Jesus: ‘
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.
John the Baptist was the messenger sent to prepare the way to the Lord Jesus Christ. John led a humble life and he said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ John 1:30 “He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” John 1:27 ‘The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said,
“Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’ John 1:29 ‘When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “
Look, the Lamb of God!” John 1:36 John introduces Jesus as the Lamb of God. Jesus lived on this earth without any sin. He was sent by God to die on the Cross for the remission of the whole world.’ Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief, when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.’ Isaiah 53:10 As He died for the sins of the world, He was called the Lamb of God. ‘
Surely he has borne our grief and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.’ Isaiah 53:4 In the book of Revelation the word ‘Lamb of God’ occurs 22 times and the word, ‘Jesus Christ’ comes 14 times.
‘ And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders
I saw a Lamb standing,
as though it had been slain,…’ Rev 5:6 Jesus is standing at the right hand of God with His scars still and always. "Christ, our Passover lamb" is only mentioned in 1 Corinthians 5:7. Christ, the crucified Son of God, however, remains at the heart of Paul's gospel. Although the term "lamb" does not appear, Hebrews affirms that Jesus Christ was God's promised sacrifice, destined to die once, to take away sins (7:27; 9:26-28; 10:1-18). Those who believe are redeemed through "
the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect" (1 Peter 1:19; Mark 10:45). ‘Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.’ Philippians 2:9-11 Jesus has been exalted above all names.
- THE LAMB THAT WAS CHOOSEN BEFORE THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE WORLD:
“Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be
with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.” John 17:24 In the prayer of Jesus in the last days on this earth, He is expressing the love of His Father even before the foundations of the world. Jesus came into the world by the will of His father and it was decided even before the foundations of the world.
‘He was foreknown
before the foundation of the world but
was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you.’ I Peter 1:20 ‘But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.’ Rev 21:27 Jesus said that He is going to prepare a place for us and He will come again and will take us with Him in John 14.
‘… even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.’ Ephesians 1:4 To enter into the City, our names have to be written in the book of life. We have to be washed by the blood of the Lamb. We should be holy and blameless before Him. Let us praise the Lord for His sacrifice on the Cross and search our hearts to live a holy and blameless life to glorify His name.
MEMORY VERSE:
Revelation 21:27
But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.
