The Lost Coin

“Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it?  And when she has found it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the piece which I lost!’ Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Luke 15:8-10 (NKJV)

Luke 15 deals with lost things. The lost coins, The lost sheep, The lost son. The meaning of the word, ‘Lost’ is cannot be found or not traceable. Jesus talks in parables. Psalms 78:2. Parables are small stories. It is not real happenings. They are examples taken from simple day to day life and easy to understand by all. Jesus told many parables about Kingdom of God, heaven and God's principles.

The Lost coin.

The parable explains the love and mercy of God for sinners. His un-comprehendable love to human beings. Luke 15:1 Pharisees and sinners were around Him. Pharisees were finding fault with Jesus. Jesus tells this parable to them. What happens in this parable?
  1. A Personal loss: It was made of silver, a costly metal. In the Old Testament period silver was used for redemption. Refer 1Cor. 1:30 He is our righteousness and redemption. A lost coin is a soul lost. It means that Jesus does not want even one soul to be lost. He gave Himself on the cross and shed His precious blood for it.
  2. Lights the lamp and searched the house: She never postponed.  She took effort to search. God does not just let us go like that. He is after us. He uses many ways to bring the sinners to Himself.
  3. Searches till she finds: She did not stop her search after some time. She continued till she found it. Ps 49:15
  4. Joy after finding: She was very happy, she found a valuable piece which gave her satisfaction and joy in her life. The same way there is great joy in heaven when a sinner repents.
  5. She calls her friends and neighbors: She wanted to share her joy to others. We should also tell others what God had done for each one of us. It is our responsibility to do so. The Psalmist says, "I will live and declare the mighty works God had done.

What do the 10 Silver coins represent?

From I Timothy 2:10-15 we can search our hearts to see whether we have these qualities as God’s children.

1. Dress modestly                                 6. Quietness

2. Socially acceptable/proper               7. Gentleness
3. Self-control/moderation                   8. Faith
4. Good works                                      9. Love
5. Submission                                     10. Holiness
